About Aberlour

Aberlour put its unique taste down to the quality of two fundamental ingredients: the soft water of the Ben Rinnes, and the locally grown barley. It maintains traditional methods of production, and allows the spirit to shine. Aberlour stills are unusually broad at the base and look a little like swans’ necks. Most Aberlour single malts are double cask matured in ex-Oloroso sherry butts and first fill American oak barrels. The American oak imparts sweet notes of vanilla and coconut; the Oloroso imparting a fruity, spicy richness. Aberlour translates in Gaelic as “the mouth of the chattering burn” which refers to the fresh water spring, the Lour, from which the distillery draws its crisp pure water from.

Founder James Fleming made a wise decision building the distillery on the site of St Drostan's Well. By doing this, he secured this priceless source of pure spring water.

History

Aberlour is an ancient place, with history of a community living there for the past 1400 years. The distillery was founded in 1879 by James Fleming. In 1898 a fire destroyed several of the distillery buildings and most of the whisky stocks. Under the supervision of Scotland’s famous architect Charles Doig of Elgin, the Aberlour Distillery was rebuilt. The distillery became part of Campbell Distillers in 1945, passing into the Pernod Ricard stable in 1974. The latter decision gave it a strong following in France.
