Digital Drams: Laphroaig Elements
One thing is certain about Laphroaig single malt: no drinker is indifferent to it. Some are bewildered by its appeal, and others love its unapologetically full-on peaty, medicinal charms. If you discover that you belong to the latter category, this can quickly become a go-to dram of choice.
The new 'Elements' collection celebrates innovation and creativity in whisky making, and heralds a new era of experimentation with mashing and fermentation. The first experimental bottling has been fermented for a lengthy 55 hours in two sizes of mash tun (one from the '90s and one from today) and with two types of wort, cloudy and semi-cloudy, before a maturation in bourbon casks. Each pack comes with 4 x 3cl samples of:
- Laphroaig 10 Year Old Sherry Oak Finish - firstly aged in European oak sherry casks, and finished n Oloroso sherry casks for an added nutty and sweet complexity to the strong peat.
- Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 15 - bottled at 55.5% abv, this is the authentic way to experience the rugged nature of this Islay dram.
- Laphroaig 16 Year Old - matured ex-bourbon barrels, which allows for the whisky's smoky profile to soften over the years, rounded off by the vanilla notes from the American oak.
- Laphroaig Elements 1.0 - A spicy and peppery palate, with tropical fruits, winter cloves and liquorice flavours.
