5 Whiskies Perfect for Celebrating Burns Night

Robert BurnsBurns Night is one of the hottest dates in the Scottish calendar, a lively tradition that celebrates the life and poetry of Scotland’s favourite son, Robert Burns. Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist, recognised as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement and widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

Today, Burns’ vast works of poetry and folk songs are treasured by the people of Scotland who each year, on the 25th of January (Burns’ birthday), come together to share a feast of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, recite his poems, sing his songs and generally have a massive celebration – and no other people celebrate quite as hard as the Scottish!

The evening acts as a wonderful celebration of Scottish tradition, culture, food and drink so; you won’t be surprised to find out that whisky plays a big part in the evening’s proceedings. From the whisky sauce often used to accompany the Haggis, to the many toasts made throughout the night; Burns night is a night when the drams flow generously!

So this begs the question; Which whisky is the perfect whisky for celebrating Burns Night?

Always at hand to help, we have compiled our list of favourite whiskies to be enjoyed and celebrated on this special night.

Pronounced “Oog-a-dal”, this special vatting from Ardbeg is a perfect companion for those Burns night suppers. Another bold character is the Kilchoman Machir Bay. From the remote island of Islay, the Machir Bay perfectly captures the Island’s character. Despite the salty sea breeze on the nose and prominent smoky, peaty flavour; this whisky is a surprisingly light and smooth dram which makes it an easy whisky to drink – and raise a toast!

    Talisker 10 Year Old

    Talisker 10 Year Old

    Price £39.00

In keeping with the Island malts, our next contender was once described by whisky writer Dave Broom as “The best, by some distance” for partnering with haggis; it is the Talisker 10 Year Old. The peppery finish of the whisky draws out a malty character from the oatmeal within the haggis which is often lost – bringing a new dimension to the traditional Scottish dish.
